Orange Pumpkins and a Glowing Monkey

This past weekend we enjoyed some family time and the (slightly) cooler weather.  We picked up Christopher from school on Friday and headed to a pumpkin patch at a local church here in Clear Lake.  We spent a few minutes snapping some pictures of Christopher amongst some bright orange pumpkins.  He was definitely more interested in feeling the pumpkins and hay than posing for the camera, but we were able to snap a few of him enjoying his time at the pumpkin patch.  His favorite part of the visit was standing next to the big pumpkins and feeling their stems.  He thought the hay on the ground was a little itchy, but that didn't stop him from trying to eat it.

Each year, MRI Technologies (Sara's employer) participates in the Bay Area Heart Walk to help raise money for the American Heart Association.  The 3-mile walk is held at the Kemah Boardwalk, and thousands of people attend to support.  This year, Christopher rode along as we walked with the MRI team.  It was a beautiful Saturday morning for a stroll by the water.  Christopher definitely had the better end of the deal.  He fell asleep as soon as we started and woke up right when we hit the finish line.

This weekend also marked the 2011 Ballunar Liftoff festival at JSC.
I volunteered for the open house in the Mission Control Center on Saturday afternoon.  Then Sara brought Christopher out to enjoy the festival.  We enjoyed walking through some of the space-themed exhibits and seeing the crew access arm and white room used at launch pad 39B for the Space Shuttle program.  As dusk set in we made our way to the balloon site.  There were a few balloons being inflated as a local band played live.  As it got a little darker outside, more balloons appeared out on the fields at JSC.  The evening balloon glow was kicked off with the National Anthem, and then things got heated up (literally).  More than 20 balloons fired their burners to light up the night sky.  Christopher was mesmerized by the bright colors glowing in front of him.  His favorite balloon was clearly the monkey.  Here is a shot of him and Mommy as the monkey glowed in front of them (he was a little tired at this point).  There are some more pictures from our weekend fun in the album.
